The project
"5 years of NS in Karlsruhe"

Exploring forms of remembrance and thereby sounding out the interrelation between art and historical science - this has been the concern of the working group "NS in Karlsruhe" since 2014, which consists of the Fachstelle für Demokratie und Vielfalt im Stadtjugendausschuss e. V. Karlsruhe, the Department of Museum Communication at the ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medien Karlsruhe, and the Karlsruhe schools Bismarck-Gymnasium, Helmholtz--Gymnasium, and Goethe-Gymnasium.

Between the school years 2014/15 and 2018/19, the project was carried out five times: The three grammar schools offered an inter-school seminar course entitled "NS in Karlsruhe". Parallel to researching for the scientific work in the Karlsruhe archives and writing down the seminar work at the ZKM, an artistic process was initiated and works of art were realized that symbolized in an extraordinary way how the students creatively processed the experienced and researched history.

For five years now, the activities of the working group have enjoyed the accompaniment and support of important partners, including the Karlsruhe General State Archive, the Karlsruhe City Archive, and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT, the Schülerakademie Karlsruhe e. V., the Kulturamt Karlsruhe and the Lions Club Karlsruhe. At this point we would like to express our special thanks to these supporters.

This publication documents the project "NS in Karlsruhe": Here, the participants reflect and tell their project-related experiences and subsequent thoughts, in order to encourage other schools and cultural institutions to find new ways in the culture of memory to go. In order to preserve the authenticity of the authors' textual language, a uniform gendering is deliberately avoided.
