As a finder and discoverer of forms, Austrian artist Martin Walde extracts new fascinating form everyday objects. In manufacturing processes and material trials taking something years, he develops a parallel »world of things« which places the onlooker and the museum in unexpected situations. “Rather like »Schrödinger´s cat« it activates our mental elasticity and makes a bump appear in our (collective) rooms of thought which we keep squeezing but refuses to go away. What would happen, if, instead of shoelaces, we woke up one morning an find a completely new way of doing our shoes? No matter how simple the new method was, we wouldn´t immediately understand how it worked. Manual and mental operations take time to gain acceptance and become a part of our vocabulary. But what do the unexpected ways of doing our shoes in common with »Schrödinger´s Cat«? They are a reality going against expextation” (M.W.)
The catalogue »Martin Walde – A Second Home for Schrödinger´s Cat« is published to mark his biggest solo exhibition so far, at Marta Herford (2010), as well as the presentations at ZKM | Karlsruhe (2009) and Neue Galerie Graz (2007). It provides an extensive overview of the board, diverse work of this exceptional artist.
