- "Only one year ago, in the summer of 1989, the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe was founded as a public institution. After a long and difficult preparatory phase, this was finally the starting signal for a new kind of cultural project that would lead over into the third millennium.
The concept and the building design of the ZKM will continue to be publicly discussed, presented, and featured in publications. It will be some time, though, before the doors of our new museum open. We want to use this time to report on the work that has already been accomplished and to present our projected goals to the public for discussion.
The in-house magazine of the ZKM, the »Mediagram«, which we are presenting here for the first time, is intended as a forum and as a “medium for citizens.” It serves to exchange information and as a newsletter, and will be published every three months; its form and “look” will vary. As we have no intention of letting our institution become set in its ways and outlook, its voice, the »Mediagram«, will obviously remain open and transparent. The magazine will not only include features by ZKM staff, it also offers the opportunity for input from outside and for constructive criticism. We hope that with our in-house magazine we will reach a large number of interested people, and thus achieve greater visibility for the goals of the ZKM. The construction phase of the ZKM over the next few years is a welcome field of experiment for new artistic ideas, as well as a necessary framework in which to gather experience, prepare new projects, and present the first results of our work. Below, we present a selection of reports and information about the ZKM."
