The players wake up on a deserted and unknown island. They can explore it freely, but they repeatedly encounter puzzle panels that block access to individual areas.
»The Witness« was inspired by the classic game Myst (1993) and is based on non-verbal communication. It completely dispenses with conventional instructions: Players learn solely by observing their surroundings. Possible puzzle solutions have to be tried out. Therefore it was important to the developer Jonathan Blow that players do not lose their orientation in the open world and can concentrate on the relevant clues. The development team worked together with architects, to create an authentic and intuitive environment.
