An Artist Who Turns Communication into Art
Born on July 6, 1933, in Mascara, Algeria, Fred Forest is a French artist whose career spans more than six decades of technological, social, and cultural transformations. Self-taught and formerly employed by the French Post, Telegraph and Telephone Administration (PTT), he has developed a singular body of work at the intersection of art, philosophy, communication sciences, and social experimentation.
His originality lies not only in his early adoption of new technologies, but above all in his ability to divert these technologies from their conventional functions and transform them into instruments of critical inquiry, participation, and collective creation.
For Forest, a work of art is not limited to an object intended to be contemplated, collected, or sold. It can take the form of a situation, an exchange, an event, a communication system, or an intervention in the very functioning of society.
This conception explains the continuity of his research, from his earliest video experiments in the 1960s to his dialogues with artificial intelligence in 2026.
