Anselm Feuerbach

Biography

Anselm Feuerbach (1829, Speyer, DE – 1880, Venice, IT) lived and worked in Germany, France and Italy, amongst other places. After studying at the art academies in Düsseldorf and Munich, DE, and in Antwerp, NL, he continued his training in Paris, F. His painting is characterized by an idealized conception of the human figure and a visual language inspired by the Renaissance and antiquity. Recurring themes include depictions from mythology and historical tradition, particularly those drawing on philosophical and literary sources
