As part of International Museum Day 2026, themed “Museums uniting a divided world,” the ZKM invites you to a panel discussion focusing on current issues in the international protection of cultural heritage.

Guests include Dr. Thomas Schauerte (Director of the Museums of the City of Aschaffenburg) and Klaus Hillmann (founder of the art transport company TANDEM and involved in establishing the Ukraine Art Center UAAC, which is dedicated to the rescue of Ukrainian artworks). Together with Christof Hierholzer (ZKM), they will discuss the current situation regarding the protection of cultural heritage in Ukraine.

The event will center on questions regarding the protection, documentation, and handling of endangered cultural heritage in crisis and war zones. It will also explore what responsibilities museums and cultural institutions can and must assume in an international context.

Held as part of International Museum Day, the event takes up the day’s central theme, which emphasizes the unifying role of museums in an increasingly fragmented world.
