Artistic Research
Hertzlab
The ZKM is a place of artistic research and development. Here, artists have the opportunity to develop their works and present them to the public.
Since the ZKM's founding in 1989, ca. 500 artists from around the world have been guests at the Institute for Visual Media and the Institute for Music and Acoustics. The Hertzlab has been uniting the fields of activity of the former research institutes since 2017.
The ZKM supports all genres that creatively confront the possibilities of electronic technologies. The productions clearly show that the boundaries significantly dissolved between art forms – whether fine art, music, dance-theater or literature.
The productions benefit from the structures at the ZKM, which are unique in the world: In the studios and workshops, works are created, which are then presented directly to the public in exhibitions and events. Lectures accompanying the works provide insights into the concepts behind them and their development. Numerous productions – artworks, as well as concerts, operas, and performances – are produced in cooperation with international partners, and are shown and performed throughout the world.
A comprehensive directory of all art productions since 1989 will be available on this website within the coming year.
Hertzlab
The Hertzlab offers artists of all genres – from fine arts to music – the opportunity to try out a wide variety of technologies in collaboration with scientists and technical developers. In addition to artistic production, the ZKM has also been involved in the development of technologies for the digital mediation of art for decades.
