STATE is a Berlin-based initiative that builds cultural programs at the intersection of science, art, and society to help forward ideas for a sustainable future. With exhibitions, residencies, and events, STATE invites its audience to curated deep- dives into current topics that shape our tomorrow. Founded in 2014 by physicist and cultural entrepreneur Dr. Christian Rauch, STATE initiated in 2020 the futures thinking initiative AKAW, a creative playground for bold futures exploration to help groups set out on collective thought experiments, explore and discuss the possibilities of the future.

Futures Canvas is a digital tool for groups to create maps of possible tomorrows. It uses gamification, crowdsourcing and futures thinking to address wicked problems through collective speculation and open ideation. When participants share and evaluate each others’ expectations, hopes, and fears, they paint a diverse and multi-faceted picture of potentially upcoming scenarios. Futures Canvas helps explore our collective ideas about the future to make better- informed decisions in the here and now.

Futures Canvas is developed by STATE’s inicitative AKAW as part of S+T+ARTS Residencies, collaborating with the RISE Cities Program of the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt to design the expert program that aimed to address local challenges. In the context of S+T+ARTS Repairing the Present, Futures Canvas has been developed further as a tool to enable and steer public discourse on the topics and issues raised by the exhibited artworks. Conceptual development and creative direction: Christian Rauch. Design and implementation: Stella Friedenberger, Benedikt Rottstegge, with support of Ismaël Sanou.
