- Description
At the centre of the work ‘untitled’ from 2010 is movement as the beginning of all artistic creation: a piece of charcoal is passed in constant repetition in a circle over a white primed canvas. Small changes in the course of the chalk create slight deviations from time to time, which overlay the black line like a grey shadow.
The drawing gesture is made possible by an arm mounted on the back of the canvas, which rotates by means of a small motor and on which there is a magnet. This pulls the metal that the artist has worked into the piece of charcoal and guides it across the canvas with a scratching sound.
The work ‘Untitled’ was created at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where Melanie Chacko studied between 2009 and 2016. The starting point for the work was an experiment with magnets on a record player. For Melanie Chacko, the circular movement is a painterly expression of our understanding of time: "It should be a never-ending drawing that simultaneously reflects the movement of our earth around the sun." The artist is fascinated by the contrast between the uniformity of the movement, a meditative moment, and the random escape of the small piece of chalk from its predetermined orbit.
