Bojidar Spassov: Fiato Continuo
Fri, July 22, 2005 8 pm CEST, Concert
During several stays as artist-in-residence at the ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics, Bojidar Spassov from Bulgaria composed Fiato Continuo, a five-part cycle for wind players and electronics, in which he experiments with brief sound excerpts played by traditional, folkloric wind instruments. Spassov generates an intriguing electro-acoustic interplay by combining these samples and processing them electronically with the sound of an instrument played live. This cycle is now available on CD as the eighth issue in the ZKM Edition released on the WERGO label. It is played by instrumentalists of musikFabrik NRW, one of Germany’s foremost contemporary music ensembles.

To mark the release of the CD the evening features the first-ever performance of Fiato Continuo V for Tuba and Electronics played by Melvyn Poore, a member of musikFabrik. Supplementing this premiere will be works for tuba by Christian Wolff, Nicolaus A. Huber and Earle Brown and a panel discussion on Spassov’s work with the composer himself, the evening’s instrumentalist, Melvyn Poore, and Ludger Brümmer, the head of the ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics.
