Homage Series for Herbert W. Franke on his 80th Birthday

"art meets science," the homage for the renowned science fiction author and computer artist Prof. Dr. Herbert W. Franke comes to Karlsruhe. On 5 July, the event series will make a stopover at the ZKM | Karlsruhe. The theme of the star-studded evening is: "The universal rollercoaster: In the net of illusionary reality." At the age of eighty, Franke is one of the most prominent science fiction writers in the German speaking area and a computer art pioneer. For more than 60 years, the physicist has applied the knowledge gained from his studies to art. The result is an immense oeuvre, which meanwhile includes more than 30 reference works and specialized books, 20 science fiction novels and short story volumes and also twelve science fiction radio plays. Franke is a member of the German PEN-Club and the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Photographie as well as co-founder of the internationally acclaimed festival "ars electronica" in Linz, Austria. Included among the products of his creative output are several thousand computer artworks.

The ZKM evening is top-class, Prof. Dr. Peter Deuflhard, president of Berlin’s Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum für Informationstechnik (Zuse Institute Berlin) and Prof. Dr. Peter Mettler from the social and cultural sciences of the Wiesbaden Technical College will be present as guest speakers and will participate in the panel discussion.
The German paperback publisher dtv and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie join the leading mce mediacomeurope GmbH, Grünwald near Munich and the ZKM | Karlsruhe as organizers. Following the talk will be a restaging of the 1989 digital ballet piece "Hommage à E. M." at the ZKM_Media Theater.
