“Only he who feels alien in the world can wonder productively” (Werner Büttner)
The most comprehensive show to date of works by Hamburg artist Werner Büttner is scheduled to open in the evening of April 05 at the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary art. Since the early 1980s, together with Martin Kippenberger, Büttner exercised a sustained influence on the German art scene. Paintings, drawings, collages and sculptures testify to Büttner’s resourcefulness, his irony, but also his biting ridicule of social realities. The roughly 300 works exhibited in the retrospective “Werner Büttner. Gemeine Wahrheiten” honor the artist’s importance for the development of German painting towards the close of the 20th century, and goes on to present him as one of its central figures and pioneers.
