Musical Language Laboratory

In the Musical Language Laboratory, selected works by Michelangelo Rossi (ca. 1602 – ca. 1656) and Carlo Gesualdo (1566–1613) are presented in practically, theoretically and artistically expanded interpretations.

Anders als beim jüngeren Michelangelo Rossi (c.1602 – c.1656) wird der Blick auf Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa (1566–1613) heute durch Aspekte seiner Biographie getrübt; Werner Herzogs Film »Gesualdo – Tod für fünf Stimmen« und Salvatore Sciarrinos Oper »Luci mie traditrici« haben Gesualdos mutmaßliche Ermordung seiner ersten Frau und ihres Geliebten thematisiert und bekannt gemacht, damit aber auch von den spekulativen, aber sinnlichen Komponenten der revolutionär-manieristischen Madrigalkunst abgelenkt. Das »Musikalische Sprachlabor« sucht – gegen historischen wie pandemischen Abstand und Widerstand – den direkten, gegenwärtigen Zugang zur Ausdruckswelt der zwei wesensverwandten Madrigalisten und ermöglicht durch multidisziplinäre Distanz die direkte emotionale und kommunikative Vermittlung 500 Jahre alter Musik: einer humanistischen Botschaft aus der Epoche etwa von Galileo Galilei.

Unlike the younger Michelangelo Rossi (c.1602 – c.1656 ), the view of Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa (1566–1613) is clouded today by aspects of his biography; Werner Herzog's film »Gesualdo – Death for Five Voices« and Salvatore Sciarrino's opera »Luci mie traditrici« have made Gesualdo's presumed murder of his first wife and her lover the subject of discussion and publicity, but have thus also distracted from the speculative but sensual components of the revolutionary mannerist art of madrigal. The »Musical Language Laboratory« seeks – against historical as well as pandemic distance and resistance – direct, present access to the expressive world of the two consubstantial madrigalists and, through multidisciplinary distance, enables the direct emotional and communicative mediation of 500-year-old music: a humanistic message from the era of Galileo Galilei, for example.
