SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE 2022

Thu, August 18 – Sun, September 18, 2022

The SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Karlsruhe, with worldwide appeal, will return from August 18, 2022 under the motto »music4life« and will light up the façade of the Karlsruhe Baroque Palace.

On August 18, 2022, the Schlosslichtspiele 2022 will celebrate its premiere and transform the baroque façade of the Karlsruhe Palace into a canvas of impressive works by international projection mapping artists every evening until September 18. In summer, the palace is the focal point of the city and the center of the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Light Festival, which allows Karlsruhe to be experienced in a new light. Prof. Peter Weibel, curator of SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Karlsruhe and artistic director of the ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medien Karlsruhe, chose the fitting motto »music4life« for the upcoming season. »The blues arose on and thus originated in the fields where slaves performed arduous labor: Music helped them to endure this life of exploitation. Songs therefore serve to compensate for the deepest suffering and yet at the same time are an expression of the highest joy – music is able to make an unbearable life tolerable. Music is joy of life. It is religion for the ears, because it opposes truth and beauty to the joyless present, like an aesthetic promise of salvation, which is also redeemed in a real epiphany«, says Prof. Peter Weibel. »It can thus become the gateway to consciousness-expanding ecstasy in an intoxication without chemistry, all by its enjoyment alone«.

We cordially invite you to the premiere on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at 8:15 pm in the palace garden Karlsruhe!

    Maxin10sity »GenER/REations«

The façade of the castle as a retro-futuristic jukebox. The show »GenER/REations« by the artist collective Maxin10sity takes us through a century playlist: from the first Viennese school to swing to the Berlin techno of the early 2000s. The picture worlds follow the musical epoch panorama and reflect the style of an entire era as an audiovisual experience. The Hungarian artist collective Maxin10sity has been touring internationally with its projection mappings (Bolshoi Theatre, Brandenburg Gate, Parliament Building Bucharest) and has been part of the Light Festival Karlsruhe from the very beginning.

from 31st August 2022 in the framework of the 11th Assembly of the World Council of Churches.

A musical narrative dedicated to the eternal cycle of creation and destruction, integrated into the Light Festival Karlsruhe on the occasion of the 11th Assembly of the World Council of Churches. »Wir Menschen sind Fische im Exil« (We humans are fish in exile) transfers the baroque sarabande by George Friedrich Händel into the electronic age and incorporates the theory of evolution as well as the fish as an early Christian symbol for Jesus Christ. Peter Weibel has been Artistic and Scientific Director of the ZKM Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe since 1999 and curator of the Light Festival Karlsruhe. Nikolaus Völzow is a system developer for interactive installations, audio-visual works and multimedia solutions for performances.

    Detlef Heusinger / SWR-Experimentalstudio »ODE. Im Lauf der Zeit«

The video opera »ODE. Im Lauf der Zeit« (ODE. Over the Course of Time) uses Beethoven's 9th Symphony to question the foundations of a contemporary as well as millennia-old idea of humanistic freedom. With twelve synthesizers and the children's choir Cantus Juvenum Karlsruhe, the opera embarks on a journey through the history of ideas in Europe – from antiquity to the Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution to our present day. Detlef Heusinger works internationally as a composer, director and conductor and heads the SWR Experimental Studio in Freiburg.

    2nd place

Prize winner 2nd place BBBank Newcomer Award in Projection Mapping 2022

Synthwave music reminiscent of the atmosphere of classic action films of the 80s underpins this first-ever projection. The artist Leonie Oridt is also a computer scientist. She lives in Dortmund and works on the topics of robotics and virtual reality.
