We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition »Marijke van Warmerdam: Then, Now, and Then«, which is part of the 2022 Hallenbau Festival!

The opening ceremony will be attended by the Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mrs. Annelies Faro, the Lord Mayor of Karlsruhe, Dr. Frank Mentrup, and the artist Marijke van Warmerdam.

In »Marijke van Warmerdam: Then, Now, and Then«, the ZKM | Karlsruhe will show fourteen new films by the Dutch artist, which were made in 2017 during a guest residency in Rome and on further visits to the Italian capital. They are films in which the artist, since 2004 a professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, captures life on the streets: people jogging, in traffic, shopping, and, of course, lovers. She celebrates the hidden order of chance. In the film loops the sounds of the city play a vital role. Together the films form a series that links the present, the past, and the future. The films bring the baroque dynamic to life again in today’s Rome, inviting exhibition visitors to stroll around the large projection screens and take in the visual and acoustic charms of the Eternal City. With her keen eye for abstract image qualities, Van Warmerdam finds the essence of the subject she has filmed, which was initially a trivial matter.

At the same time as the Marijke van Warmerdam exhibition, the Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe is opening its exhibition »Drawing Rooms: Marcel van Eeden | Karl Hubbuch«.

Access to the premises of the exhibition will be available from 7:30pm. From 8pm, after the opening of the Hallenbau Festival and the exhibitions, we invite you to join us for an informal get-together in the Mint café which is in the ZKM Foyer.
