At the 20th edition of art KARLSRUHE, the ZKM | Karlsruhe presents itself as a political house on the occasion of the start of the new scientific-artistic director Alistair Hudson. On view are works by Ukrainian artists.

Even if it has disappeared from the news again lately: The war in Europe represents a turning point. Among the millions of people who had to flee from the Russian aggression are also numerous artists and cultural workers. The ZKM exhibition at this year's art KARLSRUHE shows how artistic work is affected by a war that shakes the country to its core.

The exhibition shows videos and animations by Ukrainian artists Alina Bukina and Anna Manankina and places the warlike violence in Ukraine in a global context using the example of the initiative »antiwarcoalition.art,« curated by Tatiana Kochubinska.

The new Scientific-Artistic Chairman Alistair Hudson on the program: »We felt it was important for this year’s art KARLSRUHE that we should present some of the work that ZKM does in sup- porting artists in a hyper-connected and constantly shifting world. Here we show artists from Ukraine who have been working with us since the conflict began on our doorstep. For me, this is all part of creating an institution that has social purpose and relevance.«

In Hall 1, the Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe, the ZKM | Karlsruhe and the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) are placed next to each other as institutions of the hall construction, directly adjacent to the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, which will be a guest at the ZKM | Karlsruhe with its collection from April 29, 2023.
