Ghost in the Shell
by Mamoru Oshii, J 1995, 82 min
A young woman, who is half-made of artificial organs, dares to stage a struggle against a puppeteer who is manipulating the inhabitants of a city of the future. In doing so she forms an alliance with her supposed opponent, an android. The cartoon film, which is dominated by philosophical questions about the meaning of existence in an increasingly virtual world, wins us over with its stylistic consistency and meditative narrative rhythm. It is considered to be the best example to date of the new type of Manga cartoon films.
