Matthieu Vlaminck-Maurer

Matthieu Vlaminck-Maurer is a Computer-based Art Conservator at ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe. His work focuses on the conservation, restoration, documentation, and long-term preservation of computer-based artworks, with particular attention to obsolete hardware and software, digital data, and the complex technological environments on which these works depend.

He graduated from the École Supérieure d’Art d’Avignon in Visual Arts and also holds diplomas in programming and networking and in music as a cellist. Combining these different backgrounds, his practice involves investigating the material, technical, and conceptual aspects of digital artworks, recovering and securing digital data, and developing conservation strategies to address technological obsolescence. His work ranges from the repair and reconstruction of historical computer systems to reverse engineering, hardware replacement, software migration, and emulation.

Alongside his conservation practice, he conducts research on software and hardware obsolescence, technological dependencies, and documentation and knowledge management. He contributes to publications and conferences and collaborates with artists, technicians, researchers, and cultural institutions internationally. His interests also include open-source software, self-hosting, and technological sovereignty in the long-term preservation of digital cultural heritage.
