Content

At the end of the 90s art is a crucial point of social and cultural theories. Mediabased approaches in contemporary art function as starting point in these debates. Video developed into a universal and integrating language interlinking space and time, fiction and reality, theory and everyday life in large screen projections, monitor images and interactive systems. With »video cult/ures« the Museum for Contemporary Art I ZKM Karlsruhe presents a broad selection of works by international contemporary artists, who have made a lasting impact on current trends in art with their multimedia installations. Cross-culture and sensibility for socially determined constructions of identity are the focusses on which recent video art is concentrated. With contemporary projections they find a media reflexive articulation. »video cult/ures« describes a wide artistic field of recent video production and presents with essays by Ursula Frohne, Peter Weibel, Konstanze Thümmel, Verena Kuni, Yvonne Spielmann, .Kaja Silverman, Christian Katti, lydia Haustein and Okwui Enwezor a reader on art historical, aesthetic and cultural perspectives on the phenomenon video.
