Art’s Birthday 2012

Tue, January 17, 2012 8:00 pm CET

Location
Media Theater

On 17 January, 2012 "Art's Birthday" will be celebrated in memory of Fluxus artist Robert Filliou. In 1963, he claimed that art was born exactly one million years ago, to be precise on the 17 January, which happened to be his own birthday. Since Filliou’s death in 1987, artists worldwide have been continuing "Art’s Birthday": with "mailart", fax and "slow scan tv events". The networked events will take place ata various locations. The only precondition is that each group is able to send and receive birthday presents. For the last eight years the ars acustica group of the European Broadcast Union (EBU) has been organizing one of these events: by way of the EBU satellite channels "Haydn" and "Liszt", classic acoustic gifts will be exchanged between the participants. For the fifth anniversary of the five-hour live concert at the ZKM_Media Theater this year SWR2 presents sound art from and with Jan Jelinek and Static (Hanno Leichtmann with ensemble).

After completing his studies in philosophy and sociology, and a move to Berlin in 1995, Jan Jelinek turned with greater intensity to electronic music. His music is to a large extent based on samples. Through their pronounced alienation, the sources of the samples he applies cannot always be easily identified. Nevertheless, in a number of cases he makes reference through his CD titles to his sources or influences. This applies to "Loop Finding Jazz Records" and "Kosmische Pitch". Whereas, in the case of the former, the reference is obvious, the latter makes indirect reference, both in the title of the CD itself as well as in the single pieces, to 70s Krautrock. With the publications of Ursula Bogner under his label he ensured ample material for discussion. For Art’s Birthday, Jan Jelinek dived deep into the SWR archives so as to unearth original recordings with which he will then initiate a fulminating breakthrough into the unknown.

Static is a solo project by Hanno Leichtmann oscillating between song, track and improvisation. He has collected almost the complete real-time Berlin music scene. The old school electronic musician and drummer Hanno Leichtmann will present his current album "Freedom of Noise", his special present on Art’s Birthday at the ZKM as a trio with Sabine Ercklenz (trumpet) and Anna Viechtl (harp). For the basic material he likewise immersed himself in the SWR cosmos so as to occupy himself with the sounds and noises of rare animal species.

Students of the Karlsruhe University of Art and Design will also be performing.
