2018–2019

Together with the Nam June Paik Art Center in Yongin (Korea), and the CAC | Chronus Art Center Shanghai (China), the ZKM | Karlsruhe supports young media artists. Three selected media artists from China, Germany and Korea will present their works in a range of exhibition and education programs offered at each of the media art institutions.

After signing the Memorandum of Understanding for the project in December 2016, the three institutions selected three artists to participate in the 2018-2019 »Three Rooms« project in 2017 through recommendations and joint screening processes. Those who are chosen for the project are Kim Heecheon (Korea), Yang Jian (China), and Verena Friedrich (Germany).

The selected artists, who are based in Korea, China, and Germany respectively, build up their own layers in different forms, such as media art and installations. Despite the difference in language, they have some common ground: their work is focused on expanding our perception of ourselves as well as our surroundings, including the environments, life style, values as well as change of systems influenced by technologies and media. We hope this project will provide an opportunity to explore the present, future as well as the trend of media art from the perspectives of the young generation artists from Korea, China, and Germany.

Starting with the exhibition opening at the Nam June Paik Art Center on July 12, 2018, the group exhibition will be held at the CAC | Chronus Art Center in China from November 8, 2018 to January 20, 2019 and the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Germany from June 29 to October 27, 2019 respectively.
