Beat Generation: Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs

Thu, June 13, 2013 8:00 pm CEST

Location
Media Theater
The documentary film handles the history of a special friendship, inseparably tied up with the literary movement of the Beat Generation.

Three friends, three writers, three books: Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs, met at the end of the second world war in New York. The three key works of the Beat Generation, "On the Road", "Howl" and "Naked Lunch", were written in the 1950s − books that caused scandals, became cult books, and influenced generations of readers.

The Beat Generation: Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs documents their way, from New York to Tangier, from Paris to San Francisco. The film contains a wealth of unpublished archive material: original photos, film footage of readings, excerpts from letter exchanges, and passages from conversations that Jean-Jacques Lebel held with Allen Ginsberg in the early 90s in Paris.

After the film premiere, a discussion will be held between the curator of the exhibition and the screenplay author Jean-Jacques Lebel and ZKM Director Peter Weibel. The conversation will take place in English.

Broadcasting at ARTE: Wed, Oct. 16, 2013, 9.55 p.m.
