Chants of the Pluriverse

The photo shows a woman lying on a rattan couch. Above the couch is a metal frame which allows a screen to float in the air. On this runs the work Pluriversum by Peter Weibel.

The multi-channel video installation »Gesänge des Pluriversums« [Chants of the pluriverse] is Peter Weibel’s chief videographic work. The electronic sculpture combines the media of video, photography, film, and computer. Digital techniques and special effects assemble the different elements into an audiovisual pluriverse – or rather multiverse – of the age of technology. The impressive anthology of digital special effects that Weibel accumulated in two years of work (1986–88) visualizes the techno-transformation of the world over the last 200 years, from the wheel-based industrial revolution to the data-based post-industrial information revolution. The new experience of space and time, whose relations can be changed at will, and the many possible worlds in electronic space-time are celebrated in song.
