The Art of Immersion III

Fri, April 06 – Sun, May 27, 2018

Location
Atrium 1+2

How does an arrow poison frog perceive its environment? How does it feel to drift motionlessly in the water as a caiman and lurk for prey? Or to fly as a harpy through the densely overgrown treetops of the rainforest? The interactive virtual reality installation »Inside Tumucumaque« allows us to slip into the role of the inhabitants of the Amazon rainforest and discover the unique ecosystem of the Tumucumaque nature reserve in north-eastern Brazil from the perspective of the animals living there.

Via ultraviolet color spectra, movements in super slow motion, visualizations of echo sounder locations and color night vision and spatial 3D sound, the perception of animals is interpreted as a sensual experience that can be traced by the human perception system.

The implementation of VR-Experience as a light-filling spatial installation takes place at ZKM | Karlsruhe as part of the exhibition series »The Art of Immersion«, which is dedicated to the transforming experience of reality through immersive digital visualization systems. Using the latest possibilities of virtual reality, science and research can now be made sensually tangible through immersive immersion in simulated environments that can be experienced close to reality. As an immersive communication format, the installation, created by the Interactive Media Foundation in cooperation with Filmtank and the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, arouses curiosity and interest in scientific findings in a playful way and contributes to a deeper understanding of the endangered biodiversity on our planet. As with the Amazon Opera, which was realized between 2008 and 2010, ZKM is committed to preserving the Amazon as one of the most fascinating and diverse habitats on our planet with »Inside Tumucumaque«.
