In a world where everyone is connected to everyone else and everything is connected to everything else, the »Talking Tubes« aim to raise awareness of the value and power of direct dialog. We take the opportunity and enter into dialog with the artist of the exhibition.

FROM ZKM EDITORIAL OFFICE

ZKM
Dear Jean-Remy, your installation »Talking Tubes« will be on view at the ZKM starting July 2, 2021. It is your first project that will be shown publicly. What inspired you to create the »Talking Tubes«?

Jean-Remy
As a young student, I sat in physics class during an explanation of the principle of »communicating tubes«, and I thought to myself, »Why don't they communicate with words? You could get a lot more benefit from that!« That was the moment I got inspired.

ZKM
For your installation you use industrial waste and fire hoses. Do you want to hear or see what actually remains unheard, and unseen?

Jean-Remy
Discovering hidden talents and value in everyday things and then giving them a new meaning – that's what particularly appeals to me.

ZKM
You are the founder of the creative agency Jung von Matt, which was the only one in Germany to be repeatedly named the best independent agency in the world in Cannes. Do you see parallels in your artistic work to your work in marketing communications?

Jean-Remy
For me, creating something new from nothing is creativity. And it is thus my purpose in life – no matter what it was about at the time. It challenged me as a child, then as an advertising copywriter, later as an entrepreneur, and even today in my projects. I also have a special fondness for texts: For me, a sentence is a word that meets with good friends.

ZKM
Dear Jean-Remy, we thank you and are already looking forward to the opening of your installation at the ZKM | Karlsruhe on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at 7 pm CEST!
