A bridge of solidarity with Kharkiv: In collaboration with the International Coalition of Cultural Workers in Solidarity With Ukraine, ZKM | Karlsruhe presents »Sense of Safety« as part of the international art project »Bridges of Solidarity«. The presentation was curated by antiwarcoalition.art as an extension of the core exhibition »Sense of Safety« at the YermilovCentre in the city of Kharkiv in north-eastern Ukraine.

Central to the project is the concept of safety — reshaped by the war in Ukraine. The project examines safety not just as a feeling but as an infrastructure of care, sustained through communication and collective efforts by individuals, communities, and institutions. By presenting diverse perspectives on safety, the project aims to strengthen ties between Kharkiv and the global community, bridging distances and demonstrating solidarity. At the ZKM, videos by various international artists from the exhibition in Kharkiv will be shown on the media balcony in a specially designed installation, alternating with live stream recordings from the YermilovCentre.

Aiming to counter the isolation imposed by the war, »Bridges of Solidarity« involves more than 20 both well established and grassroot partner institutions such as the ZKM | Karlsruhe, Urbane Künste, Ruhr, and nGbK in Berlin, Germany; Arsenal Gallery in Białystok and Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Poland; the National Gallery of Lithuania in Vilnius, Lithuania; Bouillon Group in Tbilisi, Georgia; Cobra Museum, Amstelveen, the Netherlands, the OFF-Biennale in Budapest, Hungary, and many more. Designed to act as bridges, the series of events in the framework of »Bridges of Solidarity« is to emphasize Kharkiv as an important part of the global world, its cultural, scientific and political importance and to facilitate two-way interaction and connection between the international community and the north-eastern Ukrainian city. These cross-institutional events aim to foster solidarity and mutual support, the feeling of togetherness and interdependency, letting the people of Kharkiv know that they are not forgotten. Moreover, with the help of the project, antiwarcoalition.art seeks to raise awareness about the dire situation and humanitarian catastrophe occurring in the besieged metropolis, located around 50 kilometers from the Russian border, which is subject to daily shelling and nevertheless persists to fight for democratic values.

We warmly invite you to the exhibition opening on Fri, 18.10.2024 from 5 pm!
