In "Lie Detector", composer Natasha Barrett presents an immersive concert. Using basses, lasers, holographic illusions and AI-like voices, she transports us to places that seem familiar yet deceptive. It is an acoustic-visual experiment about human attachment, intuition and deception.

The "TURNS" series challenges our listening habits and redefines the relationship between artists and audience. The audience space is transformed into a stage on which we encounter each other anew. International and local artists present performances, participatory installations and playful approaches that focus on us as listeners.

Look forward to stimulating evenings in the Klangdom, where social issues, artistic research and musical expression converge: the circular economy meets the microbiome, and technological innovation meets organic resonance.

Each thematic cycle of TURNS — SOUNDING CYCLES (February–April 2025), SOUNDING OUT HEALTH (May–August 2025) and SOUNDING OUT CONNECTION (September–December 2025) — offers transformative insights into sound.

Please note: The event uses laser light, strobe effects, and high volume. The event deals with themes of trust, lies, and deception. Please take care of yourself. You can leave the room at any time. If necessary, and if you need assistance, please speak to our staff.

  1. Lie Detector

    Natasha Barrett

Lie Detector encapsulates how technology in our everyday lives maps, explores and exploits our senses and thoughts. The manipulative power of the flow of information makes the search for truth challenging and can reveal a reality we would rather ignore. The concept of suspension of disbelief, once merely a means of enjoying fiction, has become an accepted part of our daily experience.
In Lie Detector, you first experience a spa-like environment of audiovisual well-being and familiar sensory impressions. You are then drawn into a game of control and manipulation, without ever being physically touched or explicitly told what to think. You leave with new doubts, new convictions and new disbeliefs.

Between 2025 and 2026, 'Lie Detector' will be presented in three forms: as a concert, an installation and a theatre production. This year, the ZKM is presenting the experimental concert premiere featuring 3D sound (Higher-Order Ambisonics), lasers, video projection, textiles, light, Pepper's Ghost and interactive computer graphics.
