This 220-page monograph accompanies the traveling exhibition of the artist Sung Hwan Kim, featuring drawings, collages, and video installations from over 20 years of multimedia art practice. From early video works like Dog Video (2006) to his latest installations in the research project A Record of Drifting Across the Sea (2017–), tracing Korean migrants’ histories to the US via Hawaiʻi, Kim proves a captivating storyteller who interprets history through the senses and embodies and distills inexpressible things.

The publication captures his use of folklore, myth, and gossip as devices to enter his layered works, where feelings are reliable sources for understanding the world. Curator Yolande Zola Zoli van der Heide and the artist compiled five essays by internationally renowned curators and scholars, illuminating Kim’s distinctive approach—including his work with recurring performers like his niece Yoon Jin Kim and the nearly 20-year musical collaboration with composer David Michael DiGregorio aka dogr.

The book offers intimate insight into to Kim’s multifaceted oeuvre, featuring numerous large-format illustrations, artist commentaries, film manuscripts, and documentation photographs of his solo exhibitions at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, and the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe.
