“E.E.G. Kiss” by Karen Lancel and Hermen Maat
Participative performance as part of the exhibition “Silver Egg”
Fri, July 03 – Sun, July 05, 2026
Can a kiss become data?
“E.E.G. Kiss” is an immersive performance that explores intimacy, touch, and human connection in a digital world. The artists Karen Lancel and Hermen Maat create a space for reflection, and dialogue, inviting the audience to reconsider how we experience one another in an increasingly mediated world.
Wearing EEG headsets, two participants kiss while their brain activity is recorded. During kissing, brainwaves are translated into dynamic visualizations and sonification of data.
Since 2014, Lancel and Maat have presented “E.E.G. Kiss” internationally as ongoing artistic research of intimacy in the digital age. The work asks timely questions: Can a kiss be measured? Can intimacy be digitally stored and shared? How does technology influence the ways we communicate, and can it deepen our sense of connection?
Conceptualized as “digital synesthetic kissing ritual,” the work transforms invisible bodily processes and intimate gestures into something that can be seen, heard, and experienced collectively, blurring the boundaries between private and public, individuals and audience.
