The opera »Orlando« by Olga Neuwirth is making history; in 2019 it is the first premiere of a female composer's work at the Vienna State Opera.

Olga Neuwirth has had trumpet lessons since she was seven years old. From 1986 she studied painting and film at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Art College. In Vienna she continued her studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts and at the Electroacoustic Institute. Her encounters with Adriana Hölszky, Tristan Murail and Luigi Nono provided her with essential inspiration.

In 1991 Olga Neuwirth became internationally known for the first time with her two mini-operas based on texts by Elfriede Jelinek at the age of only 22. In 1998 she is presented in two portrait concerts as part of the »Next Generation« series at the Salzburg Festival and in the following year her first full-length music theatre Bählamm's Fest, with a libretto by Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek based on Leonora Carrington in a stage design by Brothers Quay, is premiered at the Vienna Festival.

Her work Clinamen/Nodus, written for Pierre Boulez and the London Symphony Orchestra, is to be heard on a worldwide tour following its London premiere in 2000. In the same year she became guest artist at ZKM Karlsruhe. Neuwirth often draws inspiration from Anglo-American culture, for example in her music theater »Lost Highway«, which premiered in 2003 and is based on David Lynch's film of the same name. The English National Opera's new production at the Young Vic will receive the »South Bank Show Award« in 2009. Olga Neuwirth receives various national and international awards, including the Grand Austrian State Prize in 2010. She has been a member of the Akademie der Künste Berlin since 2006 and of the Akademie der Künste Munich since 2013. Some of her works are available on the labels Kairos and col legno.

2012 will see the premieres of two new music theater works: »The Outcast«, based on the life and work of Herman Melville, and American Lulu, a new interpretation of Alban Berg's Lulu. In 2013 this was performed in a new production in Bregenz, Edinburgh and London.

Neuwirth is composer-in-residence at the Lucerne Festival 2016 and the percussion concerto written for Martin Grubinger (Roche Commission) will be premiered in the summer of 2016 at the Lucerne Festival under the direction of Susanna Mälkki.
