Andrea Belfi

Biography

The musician, who began playing drums at the age of fourteen, lived in Milan between 1998 and 2001, and attended Alberto Garutti’s courses on contemporary art, which have − until today − continued to influence his approach to art. For eight years, beginning in 2000, he had been drummer in the instrumental rock band »Rosolina Mar«, and, from 2002, began developing a drum solo-live set combing percussive techniques, electro-acoustic devices and synthesizer. He founded his own music label »Chocolateguns« in 2002, under which he released his first solo album »Ned no.2«. He released his second album »Between Neck & Stomach« which was enthusiastically received by critics, under the Swedish label »Häpna«, and his most recent album »Knots« released under the Italian label »Die Schachtel«, recorded and produced by Giuseppe Ielasi.

Since 2004, he has been playing with the initiative HomeMovies, which collects and restores old family films live, during performances. Multimedia works and installations are also among his repertoire: His multi-media project, a collaboration with Mirco Santi, has been shown at diverse festivals and in museums (among others, Netmage Festival, 2008, or the Claudio Buziol Foundation, also in 2008). Since 2009, Andrea Belfi has been resident artist worldwide and, in 2011, received the »Movin’ Up Prize«. He is also a much-sought for musician in collaborative projects: he is currently playing together with David Grubbs (Gastr del Sol, Bastro, Squirrel Bait), with Stefano Pilia (3/4hadbeenliminated), with Ignaz Schick or Machinefabriek, as well as in a trio going by the name of "Il Sogno del Marinaio" together with Pilia and the bassist Mike Watt, known as Minutemen, Firehose or Iggy and the Stooges. One of his special band projects is the formation »Hobocombo«, which understands itself as a tribute to the work of North American percussionist and composer Moondog.
