Biography

The composer is considered one of the most radical in contemporary music; his pieces are characterized by a certain hardness and clarity as a result of the formal criteria he uses. Kabelis studied composition at the Lithuanian Academy of Music. In 1989, he gained his doctorate which centered on researching on dynamics and sound color in orchestral pieces of the twentieth century. Alongside instrumental compositions for various arrangements, one of the points of emphasis in his works lies in electronic music, in which Kabelis consistently reduces musical material and sounds out single characteristics. Ričardas Kabelis has received numerous awards for his compositions, and his pieces are performed internationally at important music festivals. He regularly teaches and publishes in the field of electronic music and computer-supported composition. His research work, bearing the title "Computer Electronics in Musical Instruction and Composition", formed the basis for the creation of the Electronic Music Studio of the Lithuanian Academy of Music in Vilnius
