Biography

During his studies at the HfG in Karlsruhe, Alex Thelen (*1995) explored the early days of cinema and produced work on various topics, including a bacterial perspective on the visual spectacle. For a long time, he worked at the Kino im Blauen Salon, the HfG’s student cinema, as a volunteer and curator. His engagement with the materiality of analog film eventually led him to explore alternative methods of developing 8mm film and creating entry points for various people to immerse themselves in this subject (external workshops, e.g., at the ZKM or the Freie Waldorfschule Karlsruhe). In addition, he collaborated with scenographer/filmmaker Isabel Winter on a film (STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT, 2026) that attempts to explore two complex patterns of father-child relationships in a healing way, while also revealing various patterns of observation.
