Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts (HfMDK), Studio for Electronic Music and Acoustics (selma)

Biography

The Studio for Electronic Music and Acoustics (selma) is closely connected to the composition program at the HfMDK Frankfurt and is open to students from other degree programs. With locations at the HfMDK and at Atelier Frankfurt, selma provides professional workspaces for electronic music, live electronics, multichannel applications, and technology-based performative experiments. A technical manager and student tutors support studio work, rehearsals, and concerts. The studio functions as an artistic laboratory for developing, testing, and presenting students’ work. Teaching covers sound synthesis, live electronics, musical acoustics, sound reinforcement, and digital media such as computer-based, interactive, and installation formats. Further topics include computer-assisted and algorithmic composition as well as notation in technological contexts. At the center is aesthetic reflection on working with technology. Composition is understood as an interplay of artistic ideas with technical development, spatial and acoustic awareness, and recording and production practices. The studio structure fosters exchange and collaboration beyond traditional teaching formats. Its proximity to Ensemble Modern and the Internationale Ensemble Modern Academy enables low-threshold networking. Equipped with electronic and instrumental devices, concert grand pianos, and multichannel monitoring systems, selma offers an essential working environment for electroacoustic and media-based compositional practice.
