Josephine Gerhardt

Biography

Josephine Gerhardt (b. 1996) is a scenographer and artist. In her work, she explores the perception of space as a relational structure between humans, nature, and time, and examines how non-human environments can be experienced and what forms of attention and responsibility arise from this.

Her training in architecture at RWTH Aachen University and the Faculdade de Arquitetura in Porto, as well as in scenography and exhibition design at the HfG Karlsruhe, the Universidade de Lisboa, and Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro, forms the foundation of a transdisciplinary, site-sensitive practice. She works with scenography, installation, performance, photography, and printmaking.

A central motif is the element of water as a carrier of alternative temporalities and ecological fragility. In the performance Midnight Zone and in works such as Die Sprache der Koralle, Seascapes, and Praia, she explores the ocean as a sensitive archive of human interventions. Since 2022, she has been part of Green D, a project promoting sustainability in design education.
