Derek Jarman
Biography
Derek Jarman (1942, Northwood, GB –1994, London, GB) lived and worked in London and Dungeness. The filmmaker, artist, set designer and author studied English, History and Art History at King’s College London (1960–1963) and at the Slade School of Fine Art in London (1963–1967). Jarman was a lifelong advocate for queer rights and is therefore regarded as a pioneering figure in queer cinema. Homosexuality, his battle with AIDS and the resulting confrontation with his own mortality are central themes in his experimental films.
