Marc Schütze

Marc Schütze (b. 1983, Karlsruhe) is a research associate in the Museum and Exhibition Technology department at ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, where he has worked since 2015. He studied media technology at Offenburg University of Applied Sciences. His work focuses on the technical conservation of digital art and on building infrastructure for large-scale exhibitions.

For the exhibition »Choose Your Filter! 30 Years of Browser Art« (2025) he restored 24 digital works from the 1990s to the 2020s, among them several considered lost and »Eden.Garden« by Entropy8Zuper! (Auriea Harvey & Michaël Samyn), which was presented at Rhizome World NYC. The work was carried out in cooperation with the research project »Browser Art. Navigating in Style« at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The method developed in the process — virtualization of historical system environments with snapshot-based self-healing — was published in 2026 as the cover feature »When the Internet Breaks Art: A Self-Healing Virtualization Framework« in the journal IEEE Computer.

At ZKM he has contributed to the technical realization of exhibitions such as »Writing the History of the Future« (2019), »Open Codes« (2017–2019) and »Renaissance 3.0« (2023), and accompanied the international touring exhibition »Games and Politics« across 20 venues worldwide. In 2020 he developed the first version of ZKM's LiDAR-based visitor tracking system and continues to advise on its development. He releases his tools for museum operation as open source.
