Open Hertzlab: MARS! Resource Management
with the artist Katherine Ball
Fri, May 22, 2026 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm CEST
Hertzlab is going to Mars!
Living in a closed environment requires a careful balance of resources, both air and water are precious. Join members of the Red Dust Society and artist Katherine Ball to help build an industrial water recycling system using containers, building materials, and plants. Let's reflect upon our own resource and water usage, then help answer the question: How should the astronauts in Red Dust City handle their water?
This greywater system is an experimental artwork simulating sustainable water recycling for the MARS! project, exploring resource efficiency in confined environments. Designed as a recirculating system, it treats greywater (non-potable) from dishwashing using a sink, grease trap, and layers of sand, oolite, zeolite, biochar, vermiculite, and perlite located in substrate filters. October, the artwork will be used by three astronauts for a 10-day mission living inside a habitat on MARS!platz. The greywater system inquires how waste can become a resource, bridging technology and nature in a poetic inquiry into sustainability.
The event takes place in English and is located on the ground floor of the Kubus in the Subraum. Access through the glass doors in front of the ZKM main entrance.
This project is sponsored by the E.ON Foundation’s European Climate Fund 2025/2026.
