We are family! Is the motto under which the ZKM | Karlsruhe welcomes visitors to the Family Day, on October 03. Appropriately, for the date and exhibition "Vertrautes Terrain – Current Art in/about Germany", the ZKM program places the country in which we live as families at the focus of attention. Workshops, guided tours and presentations for the whole family invite one to go on a journey of discovery into known and unknown terrain. Art can be enjoyed accordingly as one wishes, robots can be programmed, light images constructed, German cuisine can be enjoyed, songs yodeled and one can simply goggle with amazement at what one sees.

The family program begins with a favorite puppet play by the quirky puppet theater, Where the Wild Wretches Live for children of 4 years and older. As an additional highlight, the visitors this year will given a Yodeling Performance by the artistic yodeler Stephanie Pelz alias Eva Rostfrei, whose stirring music sounds both familiar and yet curious. One must also not miss the presentation of the fashion highpoints of 2008 by the designer label Postweiler Hauber, as part of the exhibition "Vertrautes Terrain". Workshops on current exhibitions, such as the Weather House Workshop and Robots in Action in which nxt robots can be built and programmed with Lego Mindstorms, offer creative moments for the entire family! Big and small visitors to RetroGames may not only marvel at but also themselves play on the original arcade video games machines from the "golden age" of 1978 to 1985, as well as with games such as "Space Invaders" or "Pac Man". For once, perhaps, in the case of many parents, THE opportunity will present itself to be one nose ahead of their children in computer games. Furthermore, with the Souvenir Exchange Market, the ZKM makes its guests a very special offer: here is a place where holiday mementos of all kinds can exchange hands.

The Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe also opens its doors on this day to its permanent exhibition, as well as to a special show “Cinema & Comics. Comic Heroes in Film”, whereas the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG), opens its spaces for workshops at the ZKM | Museum Communication, as well as the catering station.
