About Sean Guptill

Sean first discovered the trumpet at the age of 8. In the years that followed, he learned to read music from various teachers and took his first musical steps in symphonic wind music at the Baden Conservatory in Karlsruhe, among other places. From an early age, Sean was inspired by well-known jazz giants such as Louis Armstrong, Count Basie and Chet Baker, as well as funk and soul acts like Tower of Power, The Blues Brothers and Chuck Mangione. Furthermore, he has been a talented solo artist himself since childhood and therefore decided in 2006 to study jazz trumpet at the Musikhochschule Mannheim with Prof. Stephan Zimmermann.

Part of his studies included participation in workshops with Ack van Royen, Joe Galliardo and Ingrid Jensen as well as in university ensembles in the areas of Latin, funk and big band. He was also able to develop his vocal skills by participating in the funk and vocal ensemble at the university for several years.

While still a student, Sean began teaching trumpet in 2007, first at the Intakt Music School in Karlsruhe and at the Karlsruhe Youth Orchestra (JOK) and finally, since 2009, at the Baden Conservatory, where he had been a student himself just 4 years earlier.

Despite his extensive work as a teacher, it was always important to Sean to be on stage and in contact with the audience as a musician and to expand his musical skills. Over the years, he gained a lot of experience as a trumpet player and singer with various jazz and pop formations. These include Soul Shot, the Plug & Play Band, Soul Café, Grupo Andaré and Funkturm. He has also appeared as a guest with bands such as The Curbside Prophets, Aurelias Jazz Trio, Die Dicken Kinder and Street Live and made a name for himself in the Karlsruhe jazz scene with various projects.
