Together with the publishing house Walther und Franz König, ZKM | Karlsruhe presents the comprehensive DVD edition that brings together for the first time all of Joseph Beuys' major actions from 1963 to 1986 at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf.

Joseph Beuys revolutionized art with his legendary actions. Sculpture was expanded into a form of action and thus into »social sculpture«. Since Beuys consciously turned away from reductionist modernism and towards the whole of our lifeworld, his demonstrations often had a disruptive, unsettling, and provocative character.

The DVD edition was created over four years at the ZKM in close collaboration with the Joseph Beuys Estate. In the process, the film and video documents, some of which were thought to be lost and difficult to access, were restored, digitized, and in some cases remounted. The edition also documents actions that were only recorded photographically and includes numerous images and archive documents.

The new publication contains 8 DVDs with over 10 hours in length, an extensive accompanying book of 520 pages in German and English, as well as an index of the audiovisual media of Joseph Beuys at the ZKM. It was also made possible by the financial support of the Kunststiftung NRW.
