    4.45 pm to 6.45 pm »Toxic States«

    »Toxic States«

Panel discussion with Ravi Agarwal, Mukul Sharma, Parnay Lal Moderator: Latika Gupta

In this panel discussion, participant:s will talk about landfills. Landfills are considered hiding places or archives of global production, transforming the local ecology into a place without natural metabolism. Many landfills appear to be quiet, however, the chemicals and toxic metals mix and seep into other layers. They smell of decay and putrefaction and attract waste collectors who rummage through the mountains for waste and scraps. Without the landfills, however, the global economy could collapse, as this is where the outcasts of capitalism - "negative goods," "polluted" bodies, and other beings - closely interact and normalize .

Locating the waste landfill as a terrestrial Critical Zone of material, human and more than human entanglements, the panel will critically examine the concept of toxicity / pollution/ contamination/ co-evolution as a way in which ‘nature,’ is produced and how it impacts our understandings of the current ecological condition.
