When the Volkswagen Transporter at the Nuclear Research Center was powered by hydrogen, the automotive industry had only just begun to consider this energy source for individual vehicles.

Why this development came about at the Center is explained here against the background of developments in automotive history and with a view to the situation at the Nuclear Research Center.

Prof. Dr. Kurt Möser is a historian of technology, author, and retired professor of history at KIT.
