Algorithms on Paper | Restoration of Kawano’s 'Design 5 B'

Not only technical components are subject to aging processes, but all other materials – such as paper – also require restoration. This video uses Hiroshi Kawano's work "Design 5 B," which he created in 1964 based on a computer-generated design, to illustrate the challenges involved in restoring and conserving works on paper. It clearly demonstrates the strategies required to preserve such works over the long term. The documentation, created as part of the exhibition "The Story That Never Ends" (April 5, 2025 - September 20, 2026), provides insight into the work of the restorers at the ZKM | Karlsruhe.
