Marieke van de Ven: Patterns of Place, (2024)

The series »Sonic Experiments« is dedicated to current developments within the various varieties of experimental electronic music. The program presents upcoming musicians and sound artists who either have a special sense for new, forward-looking impulses, or pursue particularly innovative compositional approaches. The aim of the series is to invite the audience to expect the unexpected. 

Rhythms, tones and textures are part of the soundscape of any place. We hear most sounds through air conduction. But some sounds also resonate through the materials of buildings. I recorded the sounds of the ZKM with a Geofón. The Geofón is a microphone from Lom Audio that can pick up very weak vibrations in different materials. This makes it possible to hear a place through the materials of a building. It enables the auditory perception of how the materials within the architecture pick up everyday sounds. In my composition Patterns of Place, I combine the sounds of this specific place in Karlsruhe with rhythms, tones and textures that I recorded at Willem Twee Studios in the Netherlands. In this way, I create a constellation of patterns and resonances to create an imaginary sound architecture in the sound dome of the ZKM.
