Dear visitors,

30 years of ZKM! This is the opportunity to show you the major works of our unique media art collection, presenting the exhibition  »Writing the History of the Future«. With the work »Arche Noah« or the five-meter-high steel mill wheel »Tempo Liquido« – which, instead of water, transports video screens showing running water – impressive large-format collection installations have been added to the opening of Part II in July, 2019. Together with around 500 other objects on 6,000 m2 of exhibition space, they show the diversity of the arts in the face of media change.

The presentation of our media art collection fits perfectly into the application of the city of Karlsruhe as UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts: With the recommendation of the German UNESCO Commission, the city applied for admission to the worldwide UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the category media art.

The ZKM is making a comprehensive contribution to the UNESCO application program: from August 8, 2019, the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE will transform the façade of Karlsruhe Palace into the largest digital work of art in Europe.

Media art in the middle of the city of Karlsruhe

With »Seasons of Media Arts«, media art comes into the heart of the city: interactive installations, displays, augmented- and virtual reality works in the entire Karlsruhe urban area deal with access to data of a digitally connected cty and make the visions of a participatory smart city tangible for visitors to the city over a period of four weeks.

On the occasion of my 75th birthday, the exhibition »respektive Peter Weibel« at the ZKM for the first time gives an overview of my entire oeuvre as a media and conceptual artist. Last but not least, you can look forward to two exhibitions on the Bauhaus at the ZKM in the year of anniversaries starting in October.

We cordially invite you – whether in the ZKM or in the city – to actively participate in our media art season and to continue writing the history of the future with us.

Yours

Peter Weibel
