Kaija Saariaho

Kaija Saariaho studied at IRCAM at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, among other places, where she engages with algorithmic composition and electronic sound synthesis, as well as acoustics and psychoacoustics and work with tape and live electronics.

Her body of work is as comprehensive as it is versatile. In addition to orchestral works, it includes chamber music, solo works for various instruments, electroacoustic works, choral works and, last but not least, a number of operas. Her compositional style for instruments is defined by a specific aesthetic, which she derives from the conception of her computer music works.

Saariaho’s compositions include the work »Vent nocturne« (2006) for violist Garth Knox. Together with video artist Brian O’Reilly, Garth Knox created an audiovisual version of the piece at ZKM in 2010, which was released on a DVD (Spectral Strands, 2010, Wergo, Edition ZKM) along with other compositions.

In 2011 she received a Grammy for her opera »L’amour de loin« in the category Best Opera Recording. Saariaho’s work »Semafor«, commissioned by Carnegie Hall, had its world premiere this April. In honor of her 70th birthday, classical musicians from Finland are currently creating a historically oriented collaboration inspired by Saariaho’s music. As part of this collaboration, a series of events will take place all over Finland in the fall of 2022.

Ihr Gesamtwerk ist so umfassend wie vielseitig. Neben Orchesterwerken enthält es Kammermusikwerke, Solowerke für unterschiedliche Instrumente, elektroakustische Werke, Chorwerke und nicht zuletzt eine Anzahl an Opern. Ihre Kompositionsweise für Instrumente ist bestimmt von einer spezifischen Ästhetik, die sie aus der Konzeption ihrer Computermusikwerke gewinnt.

Saariaho komponierte unter anderem das Werk »Vent nocturne« (2006) für den Bratschisten Garth Knox. Zusammen mit dem Videokünstler Brian O'Reilly erstellte Garth Knox 2010 am ZKM eine audiovisuelle Version des Stücks, die gemeinsam mit anderen Kompositionen auf einer DVD (Spectral Strands, 2010, Wergo, Edition ZKM) veröffentlicht wurde.

2011 erhielt sie einen Grammy für ihre Oper »L’amour de loin« in der Kategorie Best Opera Recording. Saariahos Werk »Semafor«, ein Kompositionsauftrag der Carnegie Hall, feierte im April diesen Jahres Weltpremiere. Zu Ehren ihres 70. Geburtstages erstellen klassische Musiker:innen aus Finnland momentan eine historisch orientierte, von Saariahos Musik inspirierte Kollaborationsarbeit. Im Rahmen dieser Kollaboration findet im Herbst 2022 eine finnlandweite Veranstaltungsreihe statt.
