The collection of the library is available online in the library catalog. It can be used for research and managing your library account.

Collection
The library's collection includes over 80,000 books and digital media. In addition, around 120 journals and four newspapers are subscribed.
As a museum and university library, the main topics are focused on contemporary art; especially media art and theory, philosophy, film, photography, product and graphic design, scenography, architecture, curatorial theory and practice, performing arts, theater, electroacoustic music, and literature. The collection also includes numerous artist monographs and exhibition catalogs. Furthermore, the library has a large collection of titles in languages other than German.
The library's entire collection is open and systematically shelved in order to allow for searching for literature directly at the shelf. Computer workstations are available for viewing digital data carriers and accessing online databases and the Internet. The library also takes care of several archives and estates owned by the ZKM and the HfG.

Registration for a reading place is not necessary at this time.

Access to the library, which is located on the first floor, is via the foyer.

Visiting the Library
Who can use the library?
Admission to the library is available to anyone. However, media can only be borrowed by members of the ZKM and the HfG.
Which working places are available?
The library offers two PC-desks, 26 desks with power connections and several armchairs. The media lounge in front of the library can be freely used as well.
Is it allowed to eat and drink in the library?
Food and drinks (except bottled water) are not allowed to be consumed.
How can I access the internet?
The free Wi-Fi network »KA-WLAN« can be used in the library. Students can also access »eduroam« with their student email address and the associated password.
Can I print / scan in the library?
You can print (for a fee) and scan (to mail or USB) on the printer in the library. You can find the prices for copies on the notice or at the counter.

Library ID / Account
Who can apply for a library ID?
Only members of the HfG and ZKM can have an ID issued. Alumni and former employees have the option of extending their ID upon request.
How do I get a library ID?
An ID must be requested in person at the information desk. There are no fees for issuing or using it.
How can I access and manage my account?
Your account can be managed in the online catalog via »My Account«. You can log in with your ID number and password and view your data there.
My library ID expired - what now?
The validity of the library card is limited. The expiry date is displayed in the account overview in the online catalog. In order to apply for an extension, all fees must be payed in advance and the validity of the student ID must be shown at the information desk.

Borrowing Media
How long can items be borrowed?
The loan period for members of the HfG and ZKM is 14 days and for alumni it is seven days. The number of possible extensions can be found in the library flyer.
How can I extend borrowed items?
Media can be extended from the 4th day at the information desk or in the online catalog via »My Account«. The requirement is that the items are not reserved.
I need a book that is not held by the library. What can I do?
You can do an interlibrary loan (see below), make an acquisition request to suggest a book for purchase via the online-catalog or just contact the library staff in person.
What is an interlibrary loan and how does it work?
We can borrow literature that we do not have from other libraries for you. Interlibrary loans can be made online or you contact the library staff with your request. You can find detailed instructions on how to use this service in the catalog introduction video.

Semester- and Personal Collections
Who can create semester and personal collections?
HfG lecturers can compile relevant literature on courses in semester collections. These titles can also be researched via the OPAC. Personal collections can be set up by individual students or by employees of the ZKM for exhibition preparations.
How can I create a semester- or personal collection?
Please contact library staff for set-up.
For how long can I keep my personal collection?
The duration can be adjusted individually. Usually for two months with a maximum of 15 books at the same time or six months for the completion of theses.

Special collections and bequests of the library
The acquired special collections are pre- and posthumous libraries or partial and thematic libraries of artists and scientists, which have been catalogued in order to make them accessible to the public.
