SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Karlsruhe 2024
Everybody Counts
Thu, August 15 – Sun, September 15, 2024
- Location
- Schlossplatz Karlsruhe
From August 15 to September 15, the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Karlsruhe will enter its 10th edition. The baroque palace façade will once again be the projection surface for sensational media art, which has attracted more than two million visitors to the UNESCO City of Media Arts in recent years. Under the title »Everybody Counts«, the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE will focus in particular on the topics of law, freedom and democracy, as the Grundgesetz turns 75.
Right next to Karlsruhe Palace is the Federal Constitutional Court, the place where our constitution is interpreted and defended. It is therefore only natural that the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Light Festival Karlsruhe will focus on law, freedom and democracy in the anniversary year and that Karlsruhe, the Residence of Law and the UNESCO City of Media Arts will merge together in the projections on the palace façade. While artists and collectives will focus on individual aspects under the umbrella term »law« in their projection mapping works, the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Karlsruhe will be held under the overarching motto »Everybody counts«.
»More than ever, as the world seems increasingly polarized and embattled, we need to come together as people, to gather in a place where we all have a voice, where we are all respected and where we are all heard,« says Alistair Hudson, Scientific-Artistic Chairman of ZKM | Karlsruhe. »Being able to contribute and participate equally, with full rights and fearless hearts, is the foundation of democracy. This is a place where everybody counts.«
So it will be interesting to see which new shows will light up the façade of Karlsruhe Palace. And, of course, you will also be able to admire full-length shows from previous years on the façade. In addition to well-known groups such as the Hungarian artist collective Maxin10sity, the 10th edition will feature the three best-placed works of the BBBank Award as well as a new show by Simone Serlenga and his Overlapping Studio: last year, they explored artificial intelligence in their show »AI+GA«, and their new work won the dm Award »Connecting worlds« for works that combine digital and analog space.

Sense of Safety
Thu, August, 15 – Sun, September 15, 2024Aza Nizi Maza. The freedom of children in a frontline city
September 1, 2024, from 8:30 pmOn the occasion of Antiwar Day, Antiwarcoalition.art presents a 20-minute special program entitled »Sense of Safety« at the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELEN Karlsruhe on September 1, 2024. In a second program, Aza Nizi Maza's studio in Kharkiv will provide insights into the reality of the north-eastern Ukrainian city with a selection of children's drawings. Despite the adversities of war, the studio offers children a space in which they can develop and express themselves artistically and encourages their ability to maintain hope, develop resilience and creativity.
Both performances form a »bridge of solidarity« with the city and communities under daily attack. The international exhibition project aims to draw attention to the city of Kharkiv, which has been turned into a gray zone by constant bombardment. It reminds people of the ongoing wars in which violence and destruction are part of everyday life and shows the human cost. The projection mappings were realized by Siarhei Navitski. The works were created with the support of the Goethe-Institut Ukraine.

»Angstfrei« Herbert Grönemeyer
Herbert Grönemeyer and his band provided the overture to this year's SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE with two brilliant live concerts. Grönemeyer is not only one of Germany's outstanding musical artists, but has also been socially and politically committed to this country and our democracy for decades. In keeping with the motto of the 10th edition – “Everybody Counts” - Herbert Grönemeyer presents “Angstfrei” as a contribution to the program - because, quote from the song lyrics: “The seriousness of the situation is beyond question…”

»Umzug in die Zukunft« Felix Wagner, Verena Klary, Nikolaus Völzow
The Go-Motion projection “Moving into the Future” is a guest contribution created by the Karlsruhe Transformation Center for Sustainability and Cultural Change of the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) at KIT in collaboration with artists from Karlsruhe. The vision of the city's founder Carl Wilhelm is revived: this time not as the realization of the will of an absolutist margrave, but as a future world to be created together. Take part in the “parade into the future” and recognize your own power of action in shaping our city and the world!
